Esteban Cambiasso happy at being named Leicester City’s Player of the Year

The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan midfielder has been a driving force in Leicester City’s midfield this season.

When Leicester City managed to persuade Esteban Cambiasso to sign for them last August, it unsurprisingly turned a few heads. The Argentine is a Champions League winner and many thought he would not want to be involved in a relegation scrap.

But Cambiasso’s personality has shone through in the Foxes’ midfield this season, especially in recent weeks, which has seen them win six out of eight matches to make sure they remain a Premier League club.

He has been a leader in the centre of the park and his presence in the dressing room will have taught the rest of the squad many valuable lessons on and off the pitch.

He has made 30 league appearances at the age of 34 and has proven that he is up for the fight, despite winning several major honours in his career at the likes of Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Cambiasso’s experience has helped guide many of Leicester’s youngsters and kept their heads in the relegation battle when they looked like they had been cut adrift.

It is incredible that Leicester have managed to survive with one game to spare, considering the fact they were seven points adrift of safety after defeat to Tottenham in March. Since then, they have managed to pick up the same number of points as they had in their first 29 games.

Cambiasso has been a major reason behind this amazing run, his discipline and ability to break up attacks has been vital in giving the more attacking players licence to focus on going forward.

The Argentine’s role in the side has been recognised as he was named Leicester’s Player of the Year in their end of season awards at the King Power stadium.

When he received the accolade, he said via the Leicester Mercury, “I want to say thank you to all the supporters who voted for me, but for me the most important trophy I can have is Leicester City playing in the Premier League next season.

“I'm a team player, and I'm more focused on the group achievements, but still I want to thank the fans for voting for me.

“In any match we play they are unbelievable. I have enjoyed this season with them, and I hope they've enjoyed the season too.”
