A look at potential impact Tottenham would make on the transfer market by buying Southampton's Toby Alderweireld, with Sunderland, Celtic and Arsenal among those affected.
With the transfer merry go round set to begin, it's rare the buying actions of one club do not affect more than just the seller.
Here is a speculative look at those affected if Spurs were to go ahead with their reported plan to sign the Belgian.
Atletico Madrid retain Toby Alderweireld's rights and are the selling club in this scenario. Selling him to Tottenham would provide them with extra cash from which to invest in players which will be better fits for the club, and to strengthen their title challenge for next season.
Toby Alderweireld has impressed on loan for Southampton this season, who have an option to buy him. The Mirror's report explains Atletico Madrid can still renege on this, causing the Saints to consider alternatives.
The Mail report that Southampton are eyeing up Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk as their top priority replacement. The Saints have bought Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster from the Scottish champions in consecutive summers with real success.
Both Toby Alderweireld and Virgil van Dijk have been touted previously as possible transfer targets for Arsenal, with The Metro suggesting the Celtic ace just last week.
If Spurs moving for the Belgian leads to Arsenal missing out on Dutchman Van Dijk, then chairman Daniel Levy will certainly chalk the deal up as a real success before he even gets started.
Everton, Sunderland and West Brom
It is not just Arsenal nor indeed Southampton who want to sign Virgil van Dijk from Celtic this summer. The Mail's report also described Everton as interested, while the same paper stated earlier this year Sunderland and West Brom have scouted the defender.
Southampton moving for the defender, prompted by Spurs, could set into place a bidding war and hasten his departure from Scotland.
Tottenham are not the only London club interested in Toby Alderweireld this summer. The Mirror report champions Chelsea are also interested in the versatile defender, and if Spurs can beat them to his signature then it will be considered a coup.
