Spurs fans debate summer sales, want Stambouli to stay... but Vertonghen gone

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been discussing who should stay and who should go this summer.

After reports surfaced (in many outlets, including the Daily Mirror) that Tottenham could sell as many as nine players this summer, supporters got to talking on the HITC Sport pages to discuss exactly who should stay and who should go.

As ever, there was disagreement - but some themes kept coming up more than others.

The first was the argument that midfielder Benjamin Stambouli should be kept at White Hart Lane ahead of next season. Multiple readers expressed their support of the Frenchman - while most did so simply by not including him in their list of players that should be sold (silence speaks volumes!).

The second was an agreement among many that senior defender Jan Vertonghen should be on the list of Spurs departees this summer. Indeed, one of Tottenham's most experienced stars and possessing more ability than any defensive player in Mauricio Pochettino's side, the Belgian simply hasn't produced this campaign.

Some fans, then, want Vertonghen to be warned to up his work-rate or leave. And the theme is consistent with reaction among the Spurs faithful after the 3-0 defeat at Stoke City, when many declared their support for allowing the 28-year-old to move on.

Who do you think should stay or go? Here's a selection of what supporters have already said...

George wrote: 'There's no way We should sell Stambouli!! All season we needed a proper destroyer in midfield, Stambouli was doing well, then they decided to play Mason and Bentelab, both can't tackle half as good as Stambouli!! Yet Botchettino bought him for this reason then don't play him!!

'All season I've said Bentelab and Mason does not have that presence needed to fill these roles, they both are lightweights there and partly why a lot of goals have been conceded! Maybe in time Bentelab will develope more, but until then Stambouli is better defensively than both!!

'Take note all you Bentelab lovers.'

would also like to see an older head brought in to lead the team on the pitch.'

Olly wrote: 'Havier Hernandez , Morgan schniderlin , Toby alderwield, left winger ,

Promote: Pritchard, coultrist, fredericks

Sell, Ade, soldado, Lennon, capoue, Paulinho, vlad, kaboul,'

Yonela Poswa (in reply to Olly) wrote: 'Best comment here. But I would keep Lennon. Wasnt given enough time to adjust to MoPos style but if you look at what he has done at Everton he can. Really think we must keep him'

Michael wrote: 'Ashley Swain, Folkestone_Y*d, Simon Pitcher and Olly have ALL confirmed what I have been saying for ages. Those players exiting this summer should be Emanuel Adebayor, Roberto Soldado, Jan Vertonghen, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho, Vlad Chiriches, Younes Kaboul, Federico Fazio, Kyle Walker and, possibly Ben Davies. Walker is a little too suspect at right back and leaves his area unguarded too often. Davies needs to increase his performance if he has any hope of dislodging Rose. Vertonghen does not show any grit and determination, despite his performance at last year's World Cup.'

Mason and Benteleb and not physically strong enough or experienced enough, and it's putting more pressure on our centre backs and we're just conceding to many goals. 1st clean sheet with a win in 17 matches sums it up, Kaboul, Chiriches, Fazio, Paulinho, Capoue, Soldado, Adebayor these players definitely need to go. I would keep Lamela for another season, bring back Lennon or try and do a swap deal with Mirallas, bring in Schneiderlin or Cabaye to partner Stambouli. Bring in Alderweireld to partner Jan, get Ayew and a Striker that can actually score goals then we should be good, that's potentially 8 players out with 5 coming in that can bring something to the team. I don't think MP needs to go crazy and buy to many players, we still have players to come into the squad like Carroll, Pritchard, Yedlin and Alli, whatever happens it should be an interesting summer at White Hart Lane.'
