Souness suggests the precise type of player Arsenal should be looking to sign

Former Liverpool and Scotland midfielder Graeme Souness has suggested the type of player Arsenal should consider signing this summer.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness explained on Sky Sports during yesterday’s coverage of Arsenal’s game against Manchester United, that Arsene Wenger needs to tamper with his team.

Souness feels the Gunners are close to becoming a team, which can fight hard for the Premier League and Champions League trophies each and every season, if Arsene Wenger makes the right decisions in the summer transfer market.

“You don’t tamper with something if it’s winning you trophies and is one of the best out there, but I would suggest it isn’t one of the best out there, that’s why they’re not winning the big trophies,” he said.

“There is room for improvement in there, you’re going to upset people but I think Arsenal are in need of that. Arsenal are a smidgeon away from being a team that can win the big trophies like the Premier League and the Champions League.”

It’s a familiar story for Arsenal fans who have been following this team under Wenger for the last few years.

At one point a few weeks ago, it looked as though the Gunners would be able to seriously push Chelsea for the title, but they slipped away while Jose Mourinho’s side made the most of their advantage.

Souness feels Wenger needs to go back to basics with the sort of players he goes after in the transfer market, giving the side a type of no nonsense element to their game.

“Someone who doesn’t get attracted to the ball, someone who doesn’t want to show how clever he is with the ball, someone who just keeps momentum going and can sense danger early.”

Wenger is at a club with very competitive resources when it comes to the transfer market and he’s shown that he’s not afraid to spend big if the right players come along at a good price.

Hopefully the Gunners can nail down the right players to take the club forward and have them competing for the biggest trophies frequently.
