Ward, 29, was released by Derby earlier this month despite still having one year left on his contract, and now the Northern Ireland international will be on the lookout for a new club.
Not only does it seem that he won't have to wait long to make a move, but it appears he may not have to move very far either, with a move to East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest reportedly on the cards.
The diminutive forward has had problems with injuries this season, but still managed to score seven goals in 29 appearances for the Rams - making him something of a desirable free agent ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Daily Mail add that Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Brighton and Hove Albion and Reading all want to sign Ward, but that Forest are close to snapping him up.
Given his history with Derby, Forest fans aren't quite convinced that this would be a good move for Dougie Freedman and his side, with many voicing their opinions on Twitter.
Ward isn't a particularly popular player at the City Ground, and the news that he could be signing for Forest has caused a split between fans - some believe that Ward's past with Derby shouldn't be a factor, whilst others believe he would be a poor signing, and Freedman should instead work with what he has rather than sign Ward.
Here are some of the reactions from Nottingham Forest fans on Twitter after rumours broke about Ward's possible move to the City Ground...
Really hope these ward rumours aren't true, injury prone and past his sell by date, Would rather give young burke a chance next season!#Nffc— Simon (@SiJohn83) May 18, 2015
Jamie Ward would perfectly sum #nffc up at the min. A few hundred country miles behind the club releasing him. Surprised? Nope. Me neither— Danny Stewart (@DannyPStewart) May 18, 2015
I'll be absolutely gutted if Ward joins. Never liked him since he was at Sheffield united. Even worse going to them down the road! #nffc— Thomas Tutin (@Thomas_NFFC_T) May 18, 2015
IF Jamie Ward does sign & plays well for us. He will be wearing the garibaldi & the forest crest and that for me deserves fan backing #nffc— Paul_nffc (@paul_26773) May 18, 2015
Don't get the aggro around Jaime Ward. Good player& v.committed, thorn in our side whenever he faced us, free transfer, no brainer #nffc— Phillip Clarke (@clarke_phillip) May 18, 2015
If we do get Ward it will be a good move, forget the obvious, football is a fickle game. After he's scored a few he will be loved! #nffc— Lee (@KiwiCarlisle) May 18, 2015
Hate Jamie Ward because he played for them, but in secret I've always rated him. He'd be a decent addition given our circumstances. #nffc.— Eddie Johnson (@E001E) May 18, 2015
