Jose Fonte: Southampton went back to basics to beat Aston Villa

Southampton hammered Aston Villa 6-1 at the weekend, highlighting the quality they have at their disposal.

Jose Fonte has told the Southern Daily Echo that Southampton went back to basics to beat Aston Villa.

The Saints hammered Villa 6-1 and Fonte says that a discussion in the dressing room prior to the match was crucial to their success.

Southampton went into the match with Villa having lost their last two games and the whole team decided that keeping things simple would be the best approach to take to break out of their bad run.

“That’s what we said. Back to basics," he said. "We cannot afford to start like the last two games and we need to be aggressive and intense and loads of runs and energy and that’s what we did. That’s what we have to try to do every game."

Whatever was discussed by the Southampton team, it certainly had the desired impact as they put in their best performance of recent times.

The South Coast club were utterly dominant as they cut apart Villa time after time, with the scoreline ultimately reflecting their dominance of the match.

It was a reminder of how dangerous Ronald Koeman's men have been this season and they will be hoping to carry this momentum into their last game of the campaign.

Southampton need to beat Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season and then hope results go in their favour, as they look to claim sixth place and qualify for the Europa League.
