James Ward-Prowse pays tribute to Southampton's attack

Southampton cruised past Aston Villa with a 6-1 victory at the weekend.

James Ward-Prowse has told Southampton's official site that the performance of the side's front-three was the catalyst for their victory over Aston Villa.

Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle and Shane Long all got on the scoresheet in Southampton's 6-1 win over Villa at the weekend and Ward-Prowse was impressed with their displays.

The England youth international says that the trio were all at their best on Saturday and he felt it was evidence of the quality that the Saints have in their squad.

"We needed to bounce back after the bad results that we've had and we knew we had to start the game well and give ourselves a chance," he said. "Luckily the front three were on fire and caused them all sorts of problems.

"The last two games have been real slow starts from us and I think you shoot yourself in the foot if you don't perform well in the first 20, 25 minutes. We needed to do that at the weekend and the goals really did help us."

Before their hammering of Villa, Southampton had actually been struggling going forward but they reminded everyone of their class on Saturday.

The Saints have been competing in the upper echelons of the Premier League table all season, but their form has tailed off of late.

Ronald Koeman's men had been showing the signs of fatigue, but they were at their very best against Villa.

Southampton's pace and skill was too much for the Villa defence to cope with and they will be hoping to take the momentum gained from the fixture in their final match of the season against Manchester City.
