James Beattie: Ronald Koeman will ‘100%’ want to keep hold of Toby Alderweireld

James Beattie says that Southampton will want to keep hold of Atletico Madrid-owned defender Toby Alderweireld.

James Beattie has told BT Sport that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman will be determined to make Toby Alderweireld’s deal permanent.

Alderweireld joined the Saints from Spanish club Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014 on a season-long loan deal.

“He (Ronald Koeman) will be looking to 100% sign Toby Alderweireld, who is on loan from Atletico Madrid and who has been absolutely sensational for Southampton this season,” former Southampton striker Beattie said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on Saturday.

Alderweireld has been one of the best players for Southampton this season, and one suspects that Koeman will want him to remain for the 2015-16 campaign.

The 26-year-old defender has enjoyed his time at St. Mary’s Stadium, as he told BBC Radio Solent last week, but much will depend on Atletico.

If the Madrid outfit decide not to sell the former Ajax star, then there is nothing that Southampton could do.

Moreover, if other interested clubs make offers for the Belgium international, then Southampton would find it tough.

North London outfit Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the services of Alderweireld, according to The Mirror.

If Atletico decide to sell the defender, then it is likely that they will want the best deal for themselves, which means that Tottenham could outbid Southampton as they can afford to spend more money.
