Could Manchester United be about to strengthen their back-line with the signing of another Argentine?
The Sky Sports pundit wrote, “On Otamendi: Sources close to the player say his dream is to go to the Premier League and United will continue trying to get him; Valencia pessimistic.”
The 27-year-old centre-back has featured 37 times for Valencia this season, scoring five goals to boot, and given his experience and talent it would be no real surprise if United are interested.
Manager Louis van Gaal was always likely to strengthen his defence given the lack of experience in that area of the field.
While Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Jonny Evans are all talented players, United have been lacking a real quality centre-back since Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand left last summer.
That said, while it may be Otamendi’s dream to play in England his contract situation suggests it will not be easy to get him.
After all, his current deal runs until the summer of 2019 and the La Liga club will be in no rush to wave him on his way.
With Memphis Depay already confirmed as one new arrival at the club, United will be expected to complete the vast majority of their transfer business early this year, and it will certainly help in their pursuit of certain players if they dream of Premier League football.
