Gary Neville has told Sky Sports that it is not a given that Memphis Depay will be an instant success at Manchester United.
“I think Depay looks like an exciting player but there’s a lot of obstacles to overcome to determine as to whether he going to become the real deal,” former United defender Neville told Sky Sports.
“He’s got to settle in the country and get used to playing football in Manchester. It will be different but it fits the bill in terms of him being a young player.”
Depay is a hugely talented player, and it made sense for United to snap him up now instead of waiting for a year or two.
The Netherlands international was arguably the best player in the Eredivisie this season, helping PSV win the league title.
The youngster scored 22 goals and created 60 chances in 30 Premier League appearances, while having a pass accuracy of 75% and a shot accuracy of 47%.
While it will take time for Depay to settle into life in England, the presence of Louis van Gaal will certainly help.
Van Gaal has worked with the youngster at the Netherlands national team and knows him inside out.
The presence of Netherlands international teammate Robin van Persie will also help Depay to ease in at Old Trafford.
