Aston Villa face Brighton and Hove Albion in an Under-21 clash tonight, and a number of players are making their return either from loan or injury.
With just Burnley to face next week, Sherwood could look to hand starts to some of the club's younger players in a bid to gauge just how ready they are for Premier League football.
Sherwood will be watching on tonight, and whilst the return of defender Nathan Baker from injury will be a boost, Sherwood should have his eye on two players in particular.
Midfielder Gary Gardner starts having returned from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest, and with four goals to his name during that stint at the City Ground, he will be hoping to make an impression on Sherwood tonight.
Also in the starting XI is forward Callum Robinson, who hit seven goals in 28 appearances for Preston on loan this season - and whilst the Lilywhites have made it to the League One play-off final against Swindon Town, Sherwood has blocked the 20-year-old from playing at Wembley as he wants to see him in action.
Both players have developed away from Villa Park this season, but are now back in contention under Sherwood - and will be looking to impress tonight.
