Don Hutchison already crossing his fingers for Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough

A tense end to the season awaits for Sunderland, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

'It's only Monday' - but Don Hutchison has already taken to Twitter ahead of a tense weekend for Sunderland, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

Indeed, there is everything at stake for the Northern trio this weekend, as Sunderland and Newcastle face potential relegation from the Premier League, while Boro will look to take the place of whoever goes down during their Championship play-off final against Norwich City at Wembley.

And Hutchison, a former Sunderland midfielder but life-long Newcastle fan, is crossing his fingers for all three sides.

The Black Cats can still suffer relegation if they lose both of their last two games, while the Magpies also face the dreaded drop if they lose their last fixture (or if they draw and Hull score eight!).

Should both fail to win, they will depend on Hull City, who have to beat Manchester United on the last day of the season to avoid relegation.

Prospects are more exciting for Middlesbrough, of course, but Norwich are slight favourites with bookmakers ahead of their Championship play-off final, while failure to go up will come as a bitter blow for Boro fans after sitting in the automatic promotion places for so much of the current season.

Will it be a hat-trick for the North East...?
