Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he feels Morgan Schneiderlin is ready to play for Arsenal.
Murphy also suggested how Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger may look to fit the Frenchman into his side along some of the options he already has in place.
Sky Sports is among the sources to have run stories this month where Schneiderlin is mentioned as a target for the Gunners and it will be interesting to see whether the Gunners can tempt the Saints into a deal this summer.
“I think Schneiderlin is ready (for an Arsenal move) – I don’t see why he can’t play alongside Coquelin, with Santi Cazorla moved further up, I’m not so sure about Ozil,” said Murphy.
Schneiderlin does have a very complete all round game, which would make him a good fit for Arsenal’s midfield.
He’s capable of playing a role in front of the back four or he can nudge a bit higher and pull the strings in terms of controlling the tempo of a game.
The benefit of him playing deep next to someone like Coquelin is that it would increase Arsenal’s ability to close out games, which is an area where they have sometimes struggled this season.
However, if he goes for the move then it’s one he needs to think long and hard about because despite the attraction of Champions League football and a better shot at the title, central midfield is not an area where the Gunners are short on bodies.
Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are also among the players who are capable of playing through the middle and Schneiderlin would have to work extremely hard for a chance.
