Report: Barcelona consider using West Ham loanee Alex Song as bait to sign Mateo Kovacic

Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

Barcelona want to add Inter Milan star Mateo Kovacic to their ranks and are considering using West Ham United loanee Alex Song as a makeweight, Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo reports.

The Catalans’ transfer chief Ariedo Braida has been in Italy over the past few days and witnessed Inter Milan’s 2-1 defeat at home to Juventus on Saturday.

The purpose of his visit was to meet up with Juve representatives, as covered by Gianluca di Marzio, but also to take a further glimpse at Kovacic – a player Braida admitted was on Barcelona’s radar.

The Croatian playmaker is having a fine season for Roberto Mancini’s side and, according to ITV, has also attracted the attentions of Premier League side Liverpool.

Barca, however, are exploring their options ahead of January – the date their transfer ban ends – and apparently will consider throwing in West Ham loanee Alex Song to any potential deal with the Nerazzurri.

The Cameroon international has spent the past season on loan with the Hammers, moving to Upton Park last summer to great surprise from a number of onlookers.

The midfield enforcer told Sky Sports only last month that he wants to remain in the Premier League next season, but his future ultimately depends on the La Liga leaders’ upcoming intentions.

For West Ham, even if they want to make his move permanent, they could find themselves out of luck if the Nou Camp outfit are set on using Song as part of a deal to acquire Kovacic.
