The Sky Sports pundit stated that the Welshman could be a surprise target for the Gunners.
Gareth Bale has had a 2015 to forget so far, with the Welshman struggling at Real Madrid and being victimised by the Spanish media.
With the Real Madrid fans turning on the former Tottenham attacker at times this season also, the flying winger’s future has become a point of contention in the press.
With the pundits discussing Bale’s future on Sky Sports yesterday, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson surprisingly stated that Arsene Wenger’s men should be looking into the possibility of signing for the former Spurs star.
“I think he would fit any club in the world,” Merson said.
“Why not Arsenal? You’re getting rid of Theo Walcott, you’ve got a load of money.”
Walcott has become something of a fringe figure at the Emirates Stadium, with the England international struggling for time on the pitch since recovering from injury.
An Arsenal move for Bale would evoke memories of Sol Campbell’s controversial decision to quit Tottenham and sign for Arsenal back in 2001 - something that most of the White Hart Lane faithful have still not forgiven the retired defender for.
With Bale’s agent recently stating that a summer move was not on the cards, it appears likely that the Wales international will still be at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu next season.
However, if the star does opt for a move he would have no shortage of suitors, while signing for Arsenal would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
