Matt Le Tissier's Twitter message to Shane Long after Southampton heroics

The Southampton striker netted a brace - including a wonder goal - against Aston Villa.

Matt Le Tissier was delighted to be able to congratulate Shane Long on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

The Southampton forward scored twice during a 6-1 rout of Aston Villa - including a long-range wonder strike.

And it was no surprise Le Tissier, a long-range specialist in his day, was most impressed by the Long goal (pardon the pun).

Indeed, the Saints legend joked on Twitter that it was a long time since a Southampton no.7 scored a goal like that, congratulating him and enjoying a laugh after Long's respectful response.

Sadio Mane stole the plaudits against Aston Villa, netting the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history - and over 100 years of top-flight football!

But Long's two goals and two assists were still vital to Southampton's efforts.

Following results elsewhere, Southampton now still have a chance of finishing fifth in the Premier League. Liverpool's 3-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace - when the Eagles spoiled Steven Gerrard's Anfield send-off - has opened the door, while Tottenham Hotspur are only a point above the Saints themselves.

As for Aston Villa, Hull's loss at Spurs means they are still safe - but it was a day to forget for Tim Sherwood and co.
