Earlier this month, a banner reading, ‘Rodgers out’ flew over Liverpool’s stadium but this time it was a far more supportive message, with the words, ‘In Rodgers we trust’ seen during the club’s final home game of the season.
The match did not go according to plan, with Liverpool losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace on a day when it was all about the imminent departure of Steven Gerrard, and Lineker joked about who exactly was responsible for the latest in-air stunt.
“Great to see Brendan Rodgers hiring a plane and banner for such a momentous occasion,” the former player wrote on social media.
As it was, Liverpool’s on-field performance could not match the feelings in the stands, with Gerrard given a remarkable send-off prior to his stint in the MLS.
The question is, with no Champions League football next season and the potential struggles to bring in the world-class talent Liverpool need to compete at the highest level, will Rodgers continue to be the man in whom the supporters trust?
