Aston Villa were humiliated at the hands of Southampton on Saturday.

Aston Villa endured a topsy-turvy Saturday afternoon, suffering a huge defeat at Southampton before their survival was guaranteed by Hull's defeat at Tottenham.

In a crazy opening 16 minutes, Senegalese forward Sadio Mane broke the Premier League record for the quickest hat-trick, scoring his three goals in just two minutes and 56 seconds.

Shane Long added a brace before half time, and whilst Christian Benteke pulled one back for Villa, Graziano Pelle scored Southampton's final goal to rack up a 6-1 win.

That put some pressure back on manager Tim Sherwood in the fight for survival, but Hull City's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham later in the day meant that Villa were mathematically guaranteed to be in the Premier League next season,

So, on a day where Villa were hammered, they ended it with celebrations having avoided relegation - and that strange mood was carried over on Twitter, as players reacted to an odd day.

Midfielder Charles N'Zogbia admitted that the team's performance simply wasn't good enough, but promised that he and his team-mates would be prepared to face Arsenal in the FA Cup final later this month.

The likes of Jack Grealish, Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke preferred to note the club's survival despite a miserable performance, celebrating Tottenham's win which keeps them safe in the top flight.

Here are some of the reactions from Aston Villa players after their 6-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday afternoon...
