Real Madrid fans participating in a poll conducted by Spanish publication AS have voted in favour of boss Carlo Ancelotti remaining at the club beyond this summer.
The Italian coach has seen his job security called into question this week following Madrid’s disappointing Champions League exit to Serie A champions Juventus on Wednesday.
Los Blancos needed to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit, and despite Cristiano Ronaldo edging them in-front, a second-half strike from former Madrid player Alvaro Morata sealed the Italian side’s passage.
Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry both predict the former Milan boss to receive his marching orders, with highly popular German coach Jurgen Klopp touted as a possible successor.
However, Ancelotti’s success during his tenure as boss of the La Liga giants shouldn’t be overlooked, especially after winning a Champions League and Copa Del Rey double last year.
Injuries have hindered the side this season and it’s easy to forget that heading into the New Year, Madrid had embarked on a Spanish record 22-game winning streak in all competitions.
The potential to reach the top again is there, and 62.3% of those Madrid fans participating in an online poll conducted by Spanish paper AS feel Ancelotti is the man to continue leading the side.
A number of players also came to his defence following their European disappointment, notably Marcelo and Sergio Ramos who both labelled the Italian a winner.
His rapport with his players is as good as has been witnessed at Madrid in years, though the decision ultimately comes down to president Florentino Perez, and he certainly isn’t one to accept failure.
