Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has predicted on Skysports.com that Southampton will get the better of Aston Villa this afternoon.
The Saints will host relegation-threatened Villa at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League, and the 47-year-old believes that Ronald Koeman’s side will come out on top.
“I think this will be a hard game for Villa,” Merson wrote on Skysports.com. “I know Southampton are having a bit of a wobble at the moment, but I am going to go for them to win this one 2-1, even though that goes against the form book.
“Both sides still technically have things to play for this season, but Villa may just have one eye on the FA Cup final now and so I am going to go for Southampton here.”
Could Paul Merson’s prediction come true?
Playing at home will give Southampton an advantage, and one suspects that Koeman and his players will be determined to pick up all three points at St. Mary’s.
The Saints have lost their last two Premier League games and have not won in four, but they will certainly be looking to give the fans something to cheer about in the final home match of the season.
Villa are not entirely safe from relegation to the Championship, and Tim Sherwood’s side will play to win today.
However, Southampton have the better team and the better players, and it will be a surprise if the Villans register a win today.
