John Carver’s side ended a run of eight successive defeats in the league last weekend with a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at St. James’ Park.
Meanwhile, QPR were hammered 6-0 by last season’s English champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
With Rangers having nothing to play for and Newcastle fighting for survival, many would make the visitors the favourites to win today.
However, Merson believes that QPR will pick up the three points and predicts a 2-1 victory for Chris Ramsey’s team.
“I do not see Newcastle getting the win they need here, I really don't, and I am going to go 2-1 QPR,” the 47-year-old wrote on Skysports.com.
“I know QPR are relegated, but Newcastle are struggling badly and I think QPR will cause them problems and win this game.”
Could Paul Merson’s prediction come true?
It will not be easy for Newcastle to win today, but they should head into the game with confidence.
QPR would be deflated today, and the fear of going down to the Championship should motivate Carver’s players.
Although Newcastle’s performance against West Brom last weekend was far from impressive, there were some promising signs.
