France international Schneiderlin is on the radar of North London outfit Arsenal, according to Sky Sports.
The 25-year-old is one of the best players in the Premier League, but former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has identified a risk the Gunners will take if they recruit him.
“You could say Morgan Schneiderlin, but at the same time a lot of Southampton players went to Liverpool last year and not many of them have cut it,” Merson told Sky Sports while highlighting the need for a holding midfield player in Arsene Wenger’s team next season.
“Likewise, if you’re going to Arsenal from Southampton it’s a big, big move, so maybe they need someone who’s already played at that pressure level. I do like Schneiderlin, though.”
Merson does have a point, but then again, every single signing has its own risk.
True, Schneiderlin has not played for big European clubs in his career and is not used to competing for top honours, but he is a very good holding midfielder.
Although the former Strasbourg star is not a world-class player, he has loads of Premier League experience and is also regular in the France national squad.
If Arsenal do go for a proven defensive midfielder, then Schneiderlin would be a good option. The Frenchman knows the Premier League inside out, and his performances over the past two or so years have been superb.
