Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen speaks highly of Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld.

Michael Owen has said on BT Sport that Southampton will be determined to sign Toby Alderweireld on a permanent contract in the summer transfer window.

The former Liverpool and Manchester United striker made the comments while co-commentating on Saturday afternoon’s Premier League game between Southampton and Aston Villa at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The match ended in a comprehensive 6-1 victory for the Saints, and Owen was impressed with the performance produced by Alderweireld.

“I think that man, Toby Alderweireld, will be high on the agenda of Ronald Koeman,” said the 35-year-old. “I really like this lad.

"He can play in a number of positions, he has really adapted to the Premier League. He is a big, strong lad, good on the ball. I think that he has been very good this season.”

Alderweireld joined Southampton from defending Spanish champions Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2014.

The 26-year-old has done well this season, establishing himself as a key player for the current Southampton team.

The Belgium international defender has featured in 25 Premier League matches, scoring one goal and creating seven chances in the process.

It will not be easy for Southampton to sign Alderweireld in the summer, as Atletico are likely to demand a good transfer fee.

Moreover, Atletico coach Diego Simeone could have plans for the former Ajax star next season.
