Could Manchester United's brilliant young goalkeeper really leave this summer?
The player’s current contract expires in 2016 and as he stalls on signing a new deal he has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.
Given how well De Gea has performed for United in recent times – growing into one of the finest stoppers in Europe – that would be a huge blow, but van Gaal is clearly already preparing for that possibility.
“When we have a very good scouting commission, than we shall already know who shall be the next goalkeeper,” the United manager said.
“We also have a list of goalkeepers who can replace him because we have to be organised always; not only for that position but for every position.”
Those comments may cause mixed feelings among United fans. They will no doubt be pleased the club are preparing for every eventuality but the prospect of De Gea being replaced this summer will fill them with dread.
After all, the Spanish international is a phenomenal player and it will not be easy to replace him. Especially when you consider the number of points he has won his side this season.
