The former Villa boss has told the team to 'fight like lions'.
They are currently four points ahead of Hull City with two games left meaning a win today sees them safe, as does a loss for Hull.
Tim Sherwood has rejuvenated the club since taking over from Paul Lambert. The former Tottenham boss will hope to get the better of Southampton today to secure their Premier League place next season.
Paul Lambert had done a good job at Villa on a stringy budget, but this season was poor from the Scot, who seemed to bring the mood down around Villa Park.
Now another former Villa manager has been wishing the club all the best in today's fixture. John Gregory sent out this Tweet this morning:
Gregory played for Villa between 1977 and 1979 and managed them between 1998 and 2002. He has since gone on to manage in Israel and Kazakhstan before taking over at Crawley Town in 2013.
He stepped down earlier this season, with Crawley eventually suffering relegation from League One.
He does not want to see another former team in Villa follow that fate.
