Aston Villa fans slam Ron Vlaar for Southampton performance on Twitter

Ron Vlaar

The Dutchman was in terrible form as Southampton won 6-1 at St Mary's.

Aston Villa are safe in the Premier League for another season, despite getting absolutely hammered by Southampton at St Mary's this afternoon.

The Saints came out of the traps on fire against Villa, scoring five goals in the first-half, with Sadio Mane scoring the Premier League's fastest hat-trick in the process.

The Senegalese forward was in top form throughout, but his job was made easy by an almost anonymous performance from the Aston Villa defence.

The main culprit getting the blame on Twitter appears to be Ron Vlaar.

The Dutch international is out of contract in the summer and has been linked to clubs such as Manchester United. After his fantastic performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Brazil last summer, those links were justified.

But he was woeful today.

He was constantly caught out of position and flat-heeled as the Southampton defence ran beyond him throughout.

Jores Okore was not much better, but the Dane is still young and learning, Vlaar has no excuse for his abject performance.

Judging by the reaction his performance received on Twitter from the majority of Aston Villa fans, most won't mind if he does leave when his contract comes to an end...
