Brentford’s chances of gaining promotion to the Premier League evaporated on Friday evening.
The Bees headed into the second leg of their Championship semi-final playoff tie against Middlesbrough away from home 2-1 down from the first leg.
It was always going to be tough for Brentford to win against Boro at the Riverside Stadium, and it proved to be so.
Lee Tomlin put hosts Middlesbrough midway through the first half, and 10 minutes into the second period Kike found the target from just six yards.
Albert Adomah wrapped up a 3-0 win for Aitor Karaoke’s side in the 78th minute when he scored with a calm finish via the crossbar.
It was a disappointing end to what was a very good season for Brentford, who got promoted to the Championship from League One only at the end of last season.
