For all of Newcastle's errors this term, some things just haven't gone their way.
Siem de Jong is the biggest example. The Ajax captain looked to be a sure bet when it came to joining the Tyneside outfit and possibly taking them to the next level.
A Dutchman with flair who could pass and create chances, as well as score multiple goals himself, there was only one thing that could go wrong with De Jong: injuries.
Granted, Newcastle would have known he had fitness troubles in the past - but it was simply unfortunate that they reoccurred.
And Facundo Ferreyra is a similar example. That looks a little more ill advised as a move, a gamble that hasn't necessarily harmed the club but just cost the Magpies a couple of million in terms of wages and fees.
Still, it's yet more bad luck. And fans would surely love to see the duo in action, however implausible that is. They were pictured together in training (right) on Thursday afternoon, while youngsters Lubomir Satka and Rolando Aarons (below) offer an exciting but risky alternative for John Carver all the same.
