Tottenham Hotspur defender DeAndre Yedlin has explained in an exclusive interview for Bleacher Report that Mauricio Pochettino is one of the main reasons he joined the club.
Yedlin agreed a move to Tottenham last summer, but stayed with MLS side Seattle before eventually switching to White Hart Lane earlier this year.
Pochettino was a big reason behind the American’s decision to become part of the Tottenham squad early, because of the way he’s nurtured younger talent in his first season in charge at White Hart Lane.
“I think that’s the one thing I really like about Jurgen (Klinsmann, USA coach). He trusts his young players, and he really gives them opportunities,” he said.
“I think it’s the same with Pochettino. That was another big factor in my decision to come here. I knew if I moved, I would get the opportunities if I earned them.”
Yedlin is facing a real fight to break his way into the Tottenham first team for next season because there is a very experienced option already ahead of him in the pecking order.
Kyle Walker is the first choice right-back at the club and someone who understands the pressures and demands of Premier League football.
He’s a good mentor for Yedlin, but is ultimately the reason the American is going to need to work doubly hard to have any sort of impact next year.
Yedlin has a lot going for him such as his pace and the extra width he can create on the right hand side, but he’s going to have to work extremely hard for his chance.
