Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld has told the Southern Daily Echo that he is very happy with life at the club.
The 26-year-old is on loan with the Saints from Atletico Madrid and has said it’s the best decision he’s ever made from a sporting point of view.
The Daily Mirror reported recently that Tottenham Hotspur were still interested in making a move to sign him, but if he is to commit to a long term future in England then it’s the Saints that seem to hold the trump cards.
“It was the best decision I could ever make, I think,” said the Belgian.
“I'm very happy here, my life is good here, so it's the best decision in my football career that I could make to any team I think.”
Southampton could push to make his move to the club permanent but it will be difficult for a number of reasons.
He’s done everything that Atletico Madrid would have been hoping for from any player they have on loan; he’s stayed fit, he’s developed and he will return as a better defender.
He’s also proven that he can be effective in the Premier League, which explains Tottenham’s interest as well as any other side that may be considering him.
Southampton will face a battle in terms of resources against a club like Tottenham, who are free of debt, who could realistically outbid the Saints to his signature.
However, they have handled him well and given him the platform to perform and he doesn’t seem like the sort of player who would forget that.
