Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld wary of Swansea threat

Swansea City have caught up with Southampton thanks to their form over recent weeks.

Toby Alderweireld has told Southampton's official site that Swansea City's recent form has been a 'wake-up call' for his side.

Swansea have crept into the battle for a Europa League place and they are now just one point behind Southampton.

It means that the Saints could slip down to eighth in the Premier League table unless they address their poor form, and Alderweireld believes that the whole squad need to respond.

"Now we are not only chasing Tottenham, but Swansea is chasing us," he said.

“We have that little wake-up call. It’s two games, two finals and it starts this Saturday with the last game home. It would be so unfortunate to throw it away.

“If there was a season that European football was possible it’s now, so I really want to achieve it.”

Swansea have had a remarkable season and their win over Arsenal in midweek has thrust them into the limelight.

Garry Monk's men certainly have momentum in their favour heading into the final two games of the campaign, but Southampton will be determined to ensure they do not overtake them.

The Saints have been competing in the upper echelons of the table all season and they would be extremely frustrated if they undid all their hard work by having a poor end to the campaign.

If Southampton do want to make it into the Europa League they will probably have to win both their remaining games and that could be a tough task, as they are up against an in-form Aston Villa side and Manchester City.
