The Reds have already scoured Southampton’s ranks for signings, with the transfers of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren last summer doing much to fray relations between the two clubs.
All three have struggled to impress at Anfield this term, with Lovren in particular struggling to recapture the form he showed alongside Fonte last season.
To fix this problem, Liverpool are targeting Fonte for a summer transfer this year, as they believe he could be available as Ronald Koeman looks to revamp his squad for a proper Champions League push.
The Portuguese defender, 31, was made captain of the Saints last summer, and has been one of the best centre-backs in the top flight this season. Rodgers believes that signing Fonte will allow him to get the best out of Lovren, whilst also allowing Emre Can to move back into his natural midfield position.
Kolo Toure is out of contract in the summer, and Fonte would certainly be a brilliant replacement for the Ivorian defender, especially if available on the market - as the Mirror report states he is.
