McClaren has revealed that he’s told Craig Bryson, Will Hughes, Jeff Hendrick and George Thorne that he wants the quartet to be the heartbeat of the team next season.
The comments suggest that McClaren won’t be looking to sign players over the summer who will do anything more than offer a back up to the four players in their strongest positions.
“The beauty of it is we have four very good midfield players in Brys, Jeff, Will and George Thorne,” he said.
“I hope at the start of pre-season and at the start of the season, we have still four very good midfield players.”
“I have said to them already, that is our engine room and I want them to dominate next season.”
McClaren showed a good ability last winter to attract good players on loan who came into the squad to support the more experienced options that he already had available.
He won’t start the season with just the above four midfielders, because the injuries which hit the team towards the end of last year, showed how badly a team can be affected by a piece of misfortune.
The players he does bring in need to back up what he already has or improve the options he already has, but he seems happy with the four players as first choice midfield options.
The key is for McClaren to keep everyone fit throughout pre-season to give the Rams the best possible chance of hitting the ground running in the next campaign.
