Gary Lineker reacts on Twitter to Brad Friedel's retirement

The Tottenham Hotspur legend took to social media in praise of another of the club's loyal servants.

Former Tottenham and England striker Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to deliver a heartfelt tribute to the north London side's 'real keeper' Brad Friedel.

The American turns 44 in four days and felt that landmark brought about the perfect opportunity to call time on his playing career, with the long-serving goalkeeper now third choice behind Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris at White Hart Lane.

Friedel's days in between the sticks will be remembered fondly by Tottenham fans, while his shot stopping ability was also on show at a number of different clubs during a long-standing career.

The veteran was once of Liverpool, before spending eight years at Blackburn Rovers. Then came a three-year stint at Aston Villa before Friedel then spent the twilight of his playing career at Spurs. A little-known fact: the 43-year-old even enjoyed a loan spell at Newcastle United.

In response to the announcement of his retirement, meanwhile, Lineker praised Friedel's 'wonderful and remarkably long' time as a goalkeeper and wished him all the best for the future.

In terms of Tottenham's goalkeeping situation, Friedel's retirement has little impact on first-team affairs, with the big story to follow this summer being whether no.1 Hugo Lloris stays at the club or not.
