Manchester United have almost achieved their goal for the season as their superior goal difference over rivals Liverpool means it is near impossible for the Merseyside club to overtake them in the table.
It means the Red Devils can now prepare for life in all four major competitions next season and for that, they will need a much bigger squad.
Even just being in the Premier League and the FA Cup for the majority of this campaign has seen their thin squad struggle when even a couple of injuries were picked up.
Over 20 players left the club last summer as Louis van Gaal cleared out most of the deadwood from David Moyes’ seventh-placed finishers. Six new acquisitions were brought in as the re-building got underway.
United have struggled for consistency at times this season due to changes in personnel and systems, but have still managed to achieve their aim of returning to the Champions League.
Next season is when the business of pushing for trophies re-commences and for that to happen, Van Gaal must complete the re-build this summer. He has made his intentions clear with the early signing of Dutch winger Memphis Depay.
Quality in depth is needed in every single position to be able to challenge on four fronts, which is the aim next season according to the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
But Woodward was not finished there. He is determined to improve United’s squad drastically this summer in all areas of the pitch in a bid to aid Van Gaal in his quest to win all four competitions next year.
Woodward said, when speaking to the Daily Mail, “We expect to be active again during the window. The squad will be absolutely deep enough and ready to challenge on all fronts next year and that involves ins and outs in the summer.”
It promises to be an exciting summer if you are a Manchester United fan. They are looking to get back among Europe’s elite as quickly as possible and will be willing to spend as much as possible to get there.
