Delph has been a crucial player for Aston Villa this season and is popular because he signed a new contract at Villa Park when he realistically could have pushed for a move away from the side.
One of the first things manager Tim Sherwood did when he was appointed, was to bring Petrov back to the club to work in a coaching capacity and Delph has provided an insight into the positive benefits that he creates.
“Stiliyan was a big inspiration to me. I really looked up to him when I first came to the football club,” said Delph.
“He was a great leader and a great captain. We still speak a lot - not just about football. We have remained very good friends since he has stopped playing.”
Petrov is a great sounding board for Delph, who will still be learning about the nature of the Aston Villa captaincy.
The former midfielder has plenty of experience and was a top player before illness saw his career brought to an unfortunate end.
However, he’s now fighting fit and has won his battle against cancer and is a key figure around the club.
He knows about the importance of the relationship between the players and the fans and he understands the nature of what supporters are looking for from any players in the side.
Hopefully the relationship will continue to blossom and hopefully Petrov will stay clear of illness in the future, helping drive the club towards success.
