Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months you will be fully aware that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool at the end of the current season.
The former England captain will be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy from the summer after finally bringing the curtain down on his 28-year stint at Anfield.
In that time he has come up against plenty of opponents, none of whom have probably courted as much controversy as Joey Barton.
Himself a Liverpudlian, and a former Everton trainee, Barton is currently plying his trade for recently relegated QPR.
While he has had some choice words to say about English midfielders in the past Gerrard has always been a player who has his utmost respect.
Gerrard will play his final ever game at Anfield this weekend and Barton has joined the chorus of ex-players paying tribute to the player on Twitter - whilst also having a cheeky jibe at his haircut:
Lots of praise and admiration flying about for Steven Gerrard today and rightly so. A phenomenal career at his boyhood club. #legend— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
He's achieved so much. One of his biggest achievement in my eyes, which often goes under the radar is having the same haircut for so long.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
It must be incredibly tough to ignore the trends and stick with the tried and tested 'no 2 on the top and 1 on the sides' for over a decade.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
In all seriousness, the most complete midfielder of my generation. He could do it all and did for a number of years.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
Highest compliment I could pay him is, he's a player I'd be proud to tell my grandchildren that I once played against... #Gerrard— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
His level of loyalty is unparalleled. People talk about his loyalty to his club? Look at the loyalty he has shown his barber? #1stemagee— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) May 14, 2015
Barton's future is itself in doubt going forward. The one-cap England international is out of contract at QPR but is believed to want a Loftus Road stay.
If not, what chance he ends up playing in America with Gerrard.
