Manager Roberto Martinez needs to bolster his ranks, and these four players could be signed for nothing in the summer.
If manager Roberto Martinez is to be believed, there will be a number of fresh faces heading into Goodison Park over the summer.
The Spaniard is naturally looking to improve in a number of positions after a dreadful season that has seen his squad struggle to cope with the demands of both domestic and European football.
Money, though, is likely to be tight after last summer’s big spend on Romelu Lukaku. That could, however, be where the Premier League’s out of contract stars could come into play.
We decided to take a look at a few of the free agents Martinez could look at over the coming months in an effort to bolster his ranks.
With a striker said to be priority to help ease the burden on Lukaku, Everton could do a lot worse than to make an approach for Burnley’s Danny Ings. While a move to rivals Liverpool seems imminent, per the Express, the offer of increased playing time could be a useful bargaining chip. He is, as well, unlikely to demand big wages.
Elsewhere, Everton could look to the future with Manchester United youngster James Wilson, who is highly regarded at Old Trafford but yet to sign a new deal. He has looked impressive since making his debut last year, and with United looking to spend heavily in the summer, a move away could be for the best.
Defence has been a particular worry for Everton this season, and with Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz set to leave, a new centre-back will be required. Step forward Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar.
While Tim Sherwood would likely be desperate to sign the Dutch international to a new deal, he would provide excellent competition for Phil Jagielka and John Stones and his Premier League experience would require no settling in period. Wages, though, could prove an issue, while the Dutchman may see himself elsewhere - with Metro suggesting that Manchester United remain keen.
In midfield, Tom Cleverley has been linked with a move for what seems like forever, and his recent form for Villa has probably made Martinez stand up and take note.
So then, there are four potential signings Roberto Martinez could take a look at this summer. While Ings looks a certainty to join Liverpool, the rest are all quite plausible.
Given the lack of money needed to sign them as well, they become options the Spaniard should not take lightly.
