Derby County manager Steve McClaren feels the club have an advantage when it comes to going after new players.

Derby County manager Steve McClaren told the Derby Telegraph what he feels is an advantage for the club in the transfer market.

The former England coach feels the Rams will always be able to attract the best players from top Premier League sides, demonstrated by the calibre of the players Derby had on loan last season.

“The advantage we have and always have had is bringing in good loan players from the top clubs,” he said.

“Players have come in on loan, players like Tom Ince, Darren Bent and Jordan Ibe this season and George Thorne and Patrick Bamford last season.”

“We can attract top players here for the Championship and that will always put us in contention.”

It will be interesting to see how McClaren goes about replacing the impressive list of names mentioned above, as the club look to push for the Premier League over the course of next year.

It is encouraging that the club has a good track record in terms of the high profile players they can sign on loan, but it always leaves the club with a problem in terms of replacing them when the deals expire.

Derby had a real problem with injuries towards the end of the last campaign and that’s where the skill in terms of being able to accumulate loan players comes in handy.

McClaren will already have good ideas and theories over the best way to improve his squad moving forward and it’s important the club is in good shape to hit the ground running next year.

The difference needs to be that the next time the club sits at the top of the Championship, they pull away and develop a lead rather than slip off the pace.
