Southampton and Tottenham fans react on Twitter to new Jay Rodriguez contract

Jay Rodriguez has signed a new long term contract with Southampton, meaning Tottenham Hotspur will have to look for a new striker target.

The BBC was among the sources to confirm that striker Jay Rodriguez has signed a new four-year contract with south coast club Southampton.

The England international has committed himself to the Saints, who have stuck by him well this year as he has struggled to get himself back into action following a long term knee problem, which has set him back in his development.

It’s a big show of loyalty on the part of the player and a big statement by Southampton, who were forced to watch several of their best players leave the club at the end of last season, as well as their manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The news will be a blow to the Argentine because the Daily Mirror has reported that Tottenham were still keen on doing a deal for him towards the end of the January transfer window.

Tottenham will be looking for a new attacking signing this summer, as they try and revitalise their attacking options in order to take a little bit of the pressure away from current front man Harry Kane.

The Saints won’t care one little bit and the main challenge for their current manager Ronald Koeman is now going to be ensuring that Rodriguez gets fully fit and stays fully fit.

It’s a very important summer for him, because he’ll have to work hard to improve his general fitness levels so he’s in good shape by the time the intense pre-season period kicks in.

If he can ensure that physically he’s in good shape and if he plays well in any friendly games he’s used for, there’s no reason why he can’t be a feature of the Southampton attack at the start of next year, with the club looking to improve on the progress made this year.

Here’s what Southampton and Tottenham fans made of the news on Twitter.
