Leroy Fer says Dutch teammate Memphis Depay can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United

Manchester United made Memphis Depay their first signing of the summer last week and Leroy Fer believes he could emulate an Old Trafford great.

Memphis Depay was one of the most sought-after players on the continent before Manchester United made him their first acquisition of the summer, despite the transfer window not even being open yet.

Depay will officially move to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven on July 1, but it is testament to his amazing potential that United were willing to get this deal done so early.

There are high hopes for the winger, who is this season’s Eredivisie top goal-scorer, when he moves to United. They have struggled in that area since Louis van Gaal moved to the club but Depay should be able to nail down one of the positions with ease.

Former Dutch teammate Leroy Fer thinks Depay is so good that he can emulate a certain Cristiano Ronaldo when he moves to United next season.

Fer was quoted by the Mirror as stating that he believes Depay has both the mentality and ability to become a star at Old Trafford. He said, “He won't be scared and that's what I like about him - he isn't scared. He will enjoy this and he will be a big player.”

The QPR midfielder also thinks that Depay’s lack of height compared to Ronaldo won’t affect him at all. He continued, “He's not as tall as Ronaldo, but he's strong, and he's got the same ability, scoring goals and he's quick.

“Ronaldo is a bigger player than him right now, because of what he's done. But Memphis is only 21-years-old and if he can be as good as Ronaldo was at Manchester United, he is going to be a big player - I think he can be.”

Fer has experience of working with Depay as they were teammates in van Gaal’s World Cup squad last year as Holland finished in a respectable third place in the tournament. The new United signing was not a regular starter but still managed to score twice in the competition.

Fer believes that van Gaal can get the best out of Depay despite the fact the Premier League is a much tougher league than the Eredivisie. He said, “I told him it's a hard league, but for him, with his ability and skills, I think he can play a massive part for Manchester United.

“Of course, he has two teammates already there like Robin van Persie and Daley Blind from the national team. He knows them, so that will help. He knows van Gaal too and he will make him a better player as well.”
