Rodriguez signed a new four-year contract with Southampton, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
He said: “Obviously you see the ambition of the club and the way it’s going. Obviously it’s been a tough year and the medical staff have been right behind me, and I just feel this is the place to be, as I want to concentrate on my football.”
The long-term interest in Rodrgiuez - who has one cap for England - had many expecting he would leave the South Coast this summer, especially as he was heading into the final year of his contract with the Saints.
Despite failing to play any football this term, due to the injury he suffered last season, the 25-year-old forward was still an in-demand Premier League star. He has proven himself with the Saints as being an talented all-round player, and it came as no surprise to see him wanted by a club of Tottenham’s stature.
However, the new contract has put paid to any rumours of a departure this summer, especially on such a long-term contract as four-years. Any club wanting to sign him now would have to approach the Saints with an outstanding offer, and it is good to see Rodriguez repaying the faith of the Southampton staff, who have stood by him through his injury this term.
