Everton star Muhamed Besic has explained in the Liverpool Echo the message manager Roberto Martinez has given him over his position.
The 22-year-old has explained that the Spaniard has told him that he wants him to become the club’s primary holding player, commenting on the mistakes he feels he’s made over his position throughout the season.
“Normally I like to play central defender but the manager thinks I am better at No6,” he said.
“I have had to work on my positioning and early on in the season I pressed too high or got out of my position and he wants to me to be the holding midfielder and learn the position.”
Besic certainly has the natural characteristics to make the holding role his own in front of the back four.
He’s become a very fit player and has an air of natural aggression, which is important in any team as long as it’s used in a controlled manner.
He has made mistakes at times this season, but he’s still a very young man and it’s the responsibility of the manager to work closely with the player to ensure that the errors are few and far between.
Everton are a team at their best when they are allowed to press forward with free flowing attacking play, which is something that Besic would allow them to do through providing that extra bit of security in front of the back four.
Hopefully Martinez can build effectively around him and create a very strong core in the middle of the team for next year.
