Sidney Sam: The unexpected free transfer perfect for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur may be able to sign a German international who is perfect for them for nothing.

As reported by Sky Sports, Schalke have released Sidney Sam and Kevin-Prince Boateng following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Koln.

The news comes as a huge shock, given that Sam only arrived at Schalke from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and had a contract until 2018 while Boateng had a year to run on his own deal.

Following the news there are likely to be plenty of suitors for both parties but it is Sam in particular who could generate interest from England following his shock release.

Tottenham Hotspur in particular would be wise to consider a move for the 27-year-old, who may have struggled at Schalke but excelled the previous season, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists for Leverkusen.

It was that form that prompted his summer switch, and for nothing more than a signing-on fee Tottenham could pull off a wonderful piece of business if they could get him.

Spurs are in desperate need of quality wide players and more goal-scoring threat, and in Sam they would have both.

On form the German international can both score and create - with 51 goals and 41 assists in his club career to date - and while he is predominantly a right winger he can also play as an attacking midfielder or on the opposite flank if required.

Players like Sam are not made free and available very often, so Tottenham should seize their chance and do all they can to sign him before someone else does just that.
