The paper has reported that three other clubs are now tracking his progress, with Villa holding the advantage because of the way he’s been allowed to play under manager Tim Sherwood and the prospect of an FA Cup final win over Arsenal.
The Gunners are one of the teams mentioned in the report as interested, with Everton also mentioned as having an interest along with German side Wolfsburg.
Sherwood has to play a clever game because certainly up against Arsenal, they can’t compete financially.
However, the number of world class midfielders Arsene Wenger already has in his squad questions the logic in going after Cleverley, who arguably wouldn’t give Wenger more than he already has.
It would also be a big factor in the mind of the player if the club produces a brilliant performance at Wembley to get one over on the North Londoners.
In a straight shoot out against Everton and Wolfsburg, Sherwood should be confident of his team’s chances in terms of keeping Cleverley, because Villa can compete financially against the Toffees, while representing the chance to stay in England when compared to Wolfsburg.
