This summer could see the beginning of what would be a huge striker merry-go-round in the Premier League.
It is unlikely that Radamel Falcao will stay at Manchester United, and with Monaco unwilling to accommodate the Colombian striker, Liverpool have been linked with a cut-price move by the Liverpool Echo. Those deals could help the Monegasque club make a move for Liverpool target Mario Mandzukic, suggests Le Parisien.
The French paper is reporting that the Ligue 1 club has already spoken to the Croatian striker. Mandzukic has scored 12 goals in 27 games this season for Atletico Madrid. Despite scoring 20 times in 42 games in all competitions, it is thought that he still hasn’t convinced Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital.
Monaco’s new transfer policy has been to sign young players and develop a younger squad with potential. However, to make that a success you need a blend of experience to help bring the younger players through.
This season, 19-year-old Anthony Martial has been a breakthrough success, but it has happened with the guidance of Dimitar Berbatov. If the Bulgarian forward is set to move on, Monaco would need another striker to lead the line on a consistent basis.
Mandzukic would be perfect for this role. The 28-year-old would be an instant upgrade, and has the experience to help guide Leonardo Jardim’s young attackers.
Liverpool had been linked with a move for the former Bayern Munich striker, a move that would be welcomed at Anfield as they have lacked a mobile No.9. He would also be able to help develop Divock Origi who arrives this summer.
Mandzukic will have a few options if he does want to move on this summer. Whether Monaco have a chance of his signature may depend on Liverpool's plans.
