Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has written in The Sun that it will be a failure for Tottenham Hotspur if they do not get in the Europa League next season.
Tottenham are currently sixth in the Premier League table with 58 points from 36 matches and occupy the final Europa League berth.
“Clubs seem to spend all year playing Thursday, Sunday and never to their benefit,” Shearer wrote in The Sun.
“Name me the last five Europa League winners? Well, I’ve had to check and it has been Seville, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Porto, Atletico Madrid.
“Still it will be seen as failure if Spurs don’t at least get in that, as it was for United when they completely missed out on Europe last season.”
Many Tottenham fans would not want their team to play in the Europa League next season, as they would deem it as a distraction.
Spurs featured in the European competition this term, but they failed to go beyond the round-of-32 stage.
Tottenham’s performances since January have also suffered, and many would suggest that as a result of fatigue.
However, that is nothing but an excuse. Winning the Europa League this season would have given Spurs an alternative means of featuring in the 2015-16 Champions League.
Moreover, Tottenham do have a large squad that should be able to handle two games in a week.
