According to comments from PSV Eindhoven’s technical director Marcel Brands, Liverpool were interested in signing Memphis Depay this summer.
Ultimately the 21-year-old agreed to join Manchester United – a move that will be finalised once he completes a medical – but the latest comments are interesting following Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers’ statement about the player with 50 club career goals last week.
And yet the latest comments, published by the Daily Star, suggest otherwise, with Brand quoted as saying, “There was a lot of interest in him. Finally we spoke with three clubs and we made contact.
“I didn’t speak with Brendan Rodgers. I had contact with Ian Ayre. I know there were some problems with (Daniel) Sturridge. Maybe that changed the decision.”
Either way, the simple fact is Depay is on his way to Old Trafford and Liverpool have to look elsewhere for the players to fire them back up the Premier League table next season.
With Champions League football almost certainly off the agenda for at least one campaign, Rodgers may find it hard to attract the players he wants to the club. But if he can get the right ones, the Reds have the youngsters to ensure the future remains a bright one on Merseyside.
