Gary Neville highlights what Memphis Depay will bring to Manchester United

The highly-rated Dutchman is set to join United in the summer after agreeing a move from PSV Eindhoven.

Gary Neville has highlighted to Sky Sports what Memphis Depay will bring to Manchester United next season.

The Dutchman is all set to link up with United after Louis Van Gaal managed to secure the highly-rated youngster from Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven.

He is the first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer for Van Gaal and United, with a number of comings and goings being mooted at Old Trafford ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window.

For now, though, the focus is on Depay, and Neville believes he will bring pace, goals and movement to the current side.

“They do need strength in that area,” he said.

“So what United are buying is potential, obviously someone who has scored goals in the Dutch league. In terms of his pace, his touch, his ability to score goals, his good movement... it is all about whether he can settle down in Manchester.”

Strong wing play was considered to be a priority during Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Old Trafford, with Ryan Giggs and David Beckham two of the more obvious examples of players that fitted into that mould. However, recent seasons have seen the Red Devils abandon that philosophy.

The signing of Angel Di Maria was arguably an attempt at bringing that approach back to the club, but has struggled to make an impact so far. Neville, though, is excited to see Depay in a Manchester United shirt as it is in the club’s DNA to play with wingers.

"For me, I am excited as a United fan in the sense that he is a wing player,” he added.

“Manchester United should play with wing players. Wingers who beat people, players who take people on, who put crosses in the box, who score goals, and he is exciting. In wide areas this season it has been a bit of a struggle at times."
