The Liverpool legend questions why the club are allowing their captain to leave, as he certainly still has something to offer.
Gerrard is out of contract come the summer and has agreed a deal to join MLS side LA Galaxy, following in the footsteps of David Beckham, and following fellow Premier League veteran Frank Lampard to America.
The move may not have came as a surprise to many given the midfielder’s advancing age and the problems that come with it, most notably his ability to compete for 90 minutes in the fast and furious Premier League.
Souness though, has blasted the decision to allow him leave, saying he can’t fathom why it has been allowed to happen.
“I just can’t understand on any level why they’re allowing him to leave the club at this time,” he said.
“I know he wouldn’t be the same Steven Gerrard we’ve seen for the last decade, he’s not going to play 90 minutes; he’s not going to be the game changer we’ve seen time and time again for Liverpool but having him on the bench, he could certainly swing games.”
The Reds midfielder scored the equaliser against Chelsea on Sunday as his side held Jose Mourinho’s team to a draw at Stamford Bridge.
The club have failed to live up to the standards they set last year when they came close to winning the title, with a number of signings bought with the money from Luis Suarez’s sale to Barcelona having failed to come good.
And Souness believes the decision to let Gerrard leave is even more baffling, as he is the type of player who can make the lesser, underperforming ones at the club play to the standard required.
“You cannot have enough good senior pros around your dressing room and he’s certainly that,” he added.
"I think at Liverpool they will regret getting rid of him at this moment in time. You cannot have enough senior pros; they’re the ones that drag the lesser players through difficult moments. They’re the standard bearers and Steven Gerrard is one of them.”
